Notes from class of December 2, 2008
Meaning of manglacharan and why we do manglacharan:
Jate mile samaj sub pave nij pat raj - guno ke samuday ki prapti ho aur uske karan khud ke pad (mauksha/mukti) ki prapti ho...
Q. Hum Mangalacharan kyu kare aur kaise bhaav hone chahiye?
- Antray naa aye
- Nastikta ka parihar ho
- Vighna bina samapti ho
- Punya ki prapti ho
- Shishtachar ka palan ho
.
Mangalacharan kaa arth samaj ne se jub hum kriya karte hey us samay uski upyogita malum ho aur uske swarup / guno ki taraf dhyan jaye. Chintan karana bahut avshyak he usse shradhhan me nirmalta aati hey. Jiske paas tatva gyan nahi hey wo padhe to usko gyan ho jaye, anadi ka agyan dur ho jaye and samayktav ki prapti ho.. aur jo samyaktvi hey uske shradhan me aur jyada dhradata hoti hey..
Page 46:
Vaidya kaun hey?
Sarvagya dev aur unki vaani aur vachno hi sahi me Vaidya hey. Uska swikar es liye nahi karana kyuki ke kisi vyakti ne kahi but ye jinvani ki baat hey es liye swikarya hey.... Kyu ki kal wo vyakti se hume rag/dvesh ho jaye to uski kahi baat me bhi shradhan nahi rahega.
2nd last paragraph:
Hamari ankhe kharab hone par hum chashma lagate hey. Hume ankho ke janese se jyada dukh hota hey yaa chashme ke jane par? ankho ke jane se jyada dukh hota hey compare to chashme ke. esa kyu? chashme to sirf sadhan hey.. In reality, hum ankho se dekhate hey... Same way, indriyo se gyan ki utpati nahi hoti. Gyan ka source indriya nahi hey way to sadhan bhut sharir ka ang hey.. Gyan to swa ka gun hey... Yadi esa hum mane to hume ankho ke nasht hone se dukh hona chahiye yaa swa ke gyan ke nasht hone se?
Lekin hum indriya ko hi sarvsva manate hey aur yahi hamari paradhinta bhi hey..
Moh ke uday hone par vishay grahan karne ki ichha hoti hey. Vishay ke grahan hone par ichha thode samay ke liye khatam ho jati hey aur hum sukh ka anubhav karte hey.But in reality, ichha ke khatam hone se jo nirakulta milati hey usse sukh milata hey nahi ke vishay ke milane se...Lekin, ichha rup parinam dukh dayak hey.. iccha nahi hona hi sahi me sukh hey...
Jaise agni par ghee dale to kya ho? pehle thode samay ke liye dabti hey aur badme bhabhak tee hey ese hi vishay ke milane se kuchh samay ke liye sukh ka abhas hota hey lekin bad me jwala ban kar aur ichha e hoti hey..trishna/lobh/ichha hona hi mul me dukh ka karan hey.. nirakulta hi sukh ka lakshan hey..
Jaise kutta haddi ki pichhe bhagata hey aur jab khata hey to uske muh se khun nikalaa hey and use lagata he ke haddi se khun nikalaa hey.. esa sun kar hume kutta kitan murkh lagata hey!!! usi tarah hum vishay ko sirf janate hey (bhogata nahi hey. gyan aur darshan hi bhogane layak hey.) aur esi se sukh nikal ke aata hey esa manate hey.. Lekin, vishay me to sukh nam ka gun nahi hey.. padarth me sukh naam ka gun nahi he to fir achetan padarth me se sukh kaise mile? Wo to aatma se milta hey...
Jo janane layak vastu e hey use gyey kahte hey. Hum aapne gyan se gyey ko janate hey aur gyey apne gyan me zalakata hey..But, hum gyey aur gyan ko alag nahi karte aur gyey se gyan ki utpati hoti hey esa manate hey aur gyan ko gyey ke adhin manate hey but in reality, gyey se gyan utpan hota hey nahi. gyey to sirf nimit rup hey.

Classnotes: 12/01/2008 Adhikar-3 Pages 45 and 46
First, we briefly revised the material discussed in the week of November 24, 2008. Next, we discussed the meaning of the manglacharan for the third aadhikar and we also discussed the introduction of third aadhikar, and lastly, we started discussion on sufferings (duukh) in the material world (sansar), and the fundamental reasons behind these sufferings.
Revision of the material discussed in the week of November 24, 2008
One’s kashay-bhav and not the external factors are the real reasons behind one’s happiness or unhappiness. For example, one likes cool breeze in hot weather. However, the same person will dislike it when he/she is sick.
Most of our efforts in our lives are directed towards sustaining our health and life. All of these efforts only increase distress (samklesh parinam). If one clearly understands and strongly believes that our aayu-karma sustains our life, then most of these distresses will go away. The reduction in the life-span (uudirna) mostly occurs due to these distresses.
In general, in second aadhikar, Pandit Ji showed that the fundamental reason behind all the sufferings is karmabandh. He used the analogy of a sick person and a doctor to illustrate the situation of the jiva in the material world. Firstly, the doctor diagnoses the disease, and narrates the conditions that can occur due to this disease. After the person understands and determines that he is suffering, only then that person will undergo the treatment suggested by the doctor.
Third Adhikar – Sufferings of the material world and description of the happiness in the moksh state
What makes one happy, or unhappy? Can body and/or other external pudgal particles result in happiness, or unhappiness? Why certain things make somebody happy at one time and unhappy some other time? What is the form of sufferings in the material world? Can one get rid of these sufferings forever? Will the sufferings go away forever by itself? What are the different ways of getting rid of these sufferings? Do all the Jivas irrespective of the indriya count suffer in similar ways? Do Gods (dev) suffer like tiryanch, manusha, and narki? Is there a clear distinction among the sufferings of all four of them? How and why does one derive pleasures from the material world? How long can these pleasures last? If the material world is full of sufferings, then where is the real happiness? How can one achieve this happiness? What is the form of real happiness? How long can it last? How can one qualify for the real happiness? Can one lose real happiness in due course of time? Does one achieve the real happiness in small installments, or is it like a lump sum payoff? Pandit Ji will answer these and many more questions in this Adhikar.
Meaning of the manglacharan stanza
Gyan, darshan, charitra (ratnatray) is the real eternal state of happiness. One should aim to attain this state. This fundamental state destroys all the sufferings from their roots.
Material world is full of sufferings. If it is otherwise, then there is no point in finding ways out of this material world like the tirthankaras and chakravartis did. The paramatmas fought all the way against their karmas to detach themselves from this material world. The happiness in this material world is short-lived. However, the siddh-parmatma has unending and infinite happiness.
A doctor diagnoses the disease and describes the conditions of this disease to convince the patient that he/she is suffering; and only then the doctor will try and motivate the patient to seek treatment. Similarly, Pandit Ji convinces the Jiva to seek the treatment, after diagnosing and describing the sufferings of this material world.
Pandit Ji draws analogy between a sick person and the condition of the Jiva in this material world:
a) That Jiva is still in this material world proves that the Jiva is still suffering.
b) Jiva/sick person doesn’t know the fundamental reasons behind the suffering.
c) Jiva/sick person doesn’t know how to get rid of these sufferings.
d) Jiva/sick person cannot stand these sufferings.
e) Jiva/sick person tries various ways out of these sufferings based on his/her wrong and incomplete knowledge. But these efforts don’t yield positive results because these efforts are not in the right direction. For example, Jiva thinks that I will be happy after I get a job, or after I get married, etc.
f) Thus, Jiva/sick person becomes dependent on others, and feels the sufferings.
Thus, after recognizing the real reason of the suffering, the form of the suffering, realizing that the efforts won’t yield any positive results, the Jiva/sick person will resort to the correct treatment. Karma is yet another reason of the suffering. When the Jiva feels great happiness in this material world, Pandit Ji describes the sufferings of tiryanch and narki to draw parallels between the sufferings of Jiva, and tiryanch and narki.
Jiva is suffering with respect to karmas, paryays (one through five indrya), and desires. Jiva can experience gyan with external factors such as indriya, maan, and other objects, but these things themselves are not gyan.
One should introspect about the efforts that one has carried out in this life from the external standpoint to become happy.
Sufferings in the material world and the fundamental reasons of these sufferings
Sufferings with respect to Karmas
The fundamental reasons behind the sufferings in material world are:
1) Mithyadarshan
2) Aagyan
3) Aasaayam
Following lines lists the roles played by darshanmoh, mithyadarshan, and charitramoh.
Darshanmoh: This leads one to the world of delusion, because it generates aatatvasradhan and mithyadarshan.
Mithyadarshan: This converts invaluable kshyopshamrup gyan into aagyan.
Charitramoh: Kashaybhav results due to charitramoh, and that is aasayam.
Thus, mithyadarshan is the fundamental reason for all the sufferings.
Sufferings due to the kshyopsham of gyanavaran and darshanavaran, and the ways to get rid of these sufferings
One would think that kshyopsham of gyanavaran and darshanavaran is better than their uday. But our situation is pitiful. This kshyopsham can be a cause of suffering.
The Jivas in this material world believes that it owns the body. Rather, he/she is the body. Jiva doesn’t know the difference between chetan-may aatma and the jad-pudgal particles. The real form of aatma is gyan and darshan. Jiva however believes that he/she is the body which has shape, taste, smell, and color. Jiva believes this because these things can be seen and felt. But Jiva doesn’t know the real self that doesn’t have any shape, taste, smell and color.
All our activities in the material world related to gyan and darshan is with five indriya and maan. Thus, the jiva believes that skin, tongue, nose, eyes, and ears are its own. Jiva likes these indriyas because he/she thinks that he/she sees and feels various things with their help.

Class notes from 11/26/08- Chp 2 pg 43
Today we continued the discussion of naam karma and several types of naam karma.
The types that were discussed today:
1) Sehanan- sharir ki rachna for e.g. vajra
2) Sthul- chhota, mota, sprashan gun ki paryay
All 20 parkrutis of sparshan exist at the same time. Similarly, all 5 types of Varna exist (uday hota hai) at the same time
3) Uchvas- is naam ke karma se hum shvaas lete hain
Shvasoshvas jivitavya ka karan hai. 10 pran hai usme se yeh ek hai. Jivitavya ke karnno mein se sabse balvan karan aayu karma hai.
4) Swar- swar karma ke uday se swar utpann hota hai.
Sharir pudgal hai isliye usme me sparsh, ras, gnadh aadi hai. Shabd bhi pudgal ke pind hai- aur shabd matlab bhasha vargana ki pudgal rup parinamiti.
Sakshar/ anakshar shabd ka difference: Sounds, rhythm, dhvani with no words is anakshar rup or swar rup. Akshar rup is with words and is found only in sangni panchendriya.
5) Gamanagaman: Jis karma se aakash dravya mein gaman aur aagaman rup pravrutti hoti hai. There are two types, shubh and ashubh. Just like 2 people if tied together, only the more powerful will get things done, similarly, sharir and aatma are tied together. There could be several options like sharir ki shakti ho ya na ho and aatma ki iccha ho ya na ho. Generally karya tab hi ho sakta hai jan sharir ki shakti ho aur aatma ki iccha ho (sharir ke iccha nahhi hoti). Lekin kabhi kuch bahya badhak karan bhi ho sakte hai jinki vajeh se karya sampann nahi hota. Sharir ki shakti hai, aatma ki iccha hai lekin baarish hai to baahar nahi ja sakte. Anek dusre badhak karan hai. We need to keep in mind that jahan ek karya banta hai, vaha bahut saare karan milte hai tab jake karya hota hai.
Ab aise types ka discussion jo MMP mein describe nahi kiye gaye:
6) Anupurvi- Vigrah gati mein aatma ka shape jisse banta hai. Purane sharir ka shape retain hota hai. Yadi manushya chhod ke dev mein jaaye to vo devgatyanupurvi karma kehlata hai.
7) Upghat- apna sharir apna hi ghaat kare
9) Aatap- jiske nimit se bahya mein sharir se prakash utpann hota hai aur sharir garma rehta hain- eg surya- found in tiryanch only
10) Udyot- jiske nimit se bahya mein sharir se prakash utpann hota hai aur sharir sheetal rehta hain. eg- chandrama—found only in tiryanch
11) Agurulaghu—jisse sharir bahut bhaari ya halkaa nahi hota
12) Badar- kisi se ruk jaata hai ya kisi ko rok sakta hai Kuch aise bhi hai jo dikhte nahi, par fir bhai badar hai
Tras jeev sirf badar hote hai
14) Aparyapt- aparyapt hai to antarmuhurt mein mrutyu nischit hai- otherwise paryapth ho jata hai
17) Aadey- sharir mein kanti hoti hai
18) Anadey-sharir mein kanti nahi hoti
19) Shubh- sharir ke avyay sundar hote hai. This is different from Subhag since isme priti ka bhaav nahi hota
20) Ashubh- avyay sundar nahi hote. Similarly different than Durbhag since isme dvesh/apriti ka bhaav nahi hota.
21) Suswar- accha swar hona
22) Duswar- accha swar nahi hona
23) Pratyek- jis sharir ka ek hi swami. Pratyek mein two types- jinke ashray se nigodhia jeev rehte hai- eg kela, kakdi, bhindi. Other type is jisme nigodh jeev rehte hai lekin fir continuously utpann nahi hote
24) Sadharan- Ek sharir ke anek swami- found in nigodh jeev of vansapatis like kandmul
25) Sthir Asthir- Sharir mein cough, pitt etc.agar asthir ho to rogadik ki utpatti hoti hai. If sthir ho to sharir rograhit rehta hai.
26) Tirthankar- moksh marg mein uski sthiti nahi hai
Other notes:
1) Sharir ke jaise bhi hone mein naam karma ka uday samarth karan hai- baaki bahya karan like exercise etc asamarth hai.
2) Naam karma ke asankhya bhed hai leking kkeval gyani utna hi batate hai jitna chadmasta ke gyan gamya hai aur prayojanbhut hai.
3) Purusharth to karna chahiye lekin jo ekant manyata hai ki maine yeh kiya, vo change karna hai kyonki hamare chahne se ya purusharth karne se vastu ho hi jaaye aisa nahi.
4) Sansar avastha mein tirthankar aur aaharak sharir yeh naam karma nahi hai
5) Manushya mein vaikriya sharir aur tiryanch prakrutiya nahi
Gotra Karma
1) Jis kul mein acche sansakr aur diksha lene yogya kul hai vo ucch kul kehlate hai. Jinme maas bhakshan aur madya pan ho vaise kul nich kehlate hai.
2) Gotra karm change nahi hota- it remains what u have at the time of birth.
Kul ucha hai ke nicha vo kevli gamya hai- gotra karma kaafi sukshma hai
3) Kshudra, tiryanch aur narki nich gotra mane gaye hai. Manushay mein ucha nich dono hai aur dev ko uch gotra hi hai.
Jo bhi kaha hai uspar vichar kare to hamari avastha se match hota hai aisi pratiti hame hogi. Aisi pratiti hone par granthadi mein shraddhan badhta hai. Isliye vichar, chintan karna aavashyak hai.

classnotes from 11/24/08, page 41-42, vedniya karma ka uday
* few points that we came across during the class and on which we should think over when we get time:

Notes for 11/17/08
Anantanubandi, pratyakhayan, Apratyakhayn, sanjwlan
9 no kashay – "kinchet"(minor) indirect effect on the soul. Krodh kayay do the major cause but no-kahay is minor. No-kasha is not so stronge and also called Akahay. No-kasha needs help from the 4 major kashay(Krodh, Maan ,Maya, Lobh) to come out. EX- Like if you have maya or maan(kashay) them hasya kashay can come. It's depended in the 4 major kahay.
9 types of no-kashay:
Hasya , rati, artai, shook, Bhay, Jugupsa, 3 Ved
1-हास्य- To laugh/amusement on the funny stuff, worldly funny. Like the gods statue should not be laughing pose but it should be peaceful and veethraag pose. All kashay will damage the true nature of the soul. Hence the hasya kahsy also does the same thing.
2-रति- is to like somebody or something - is also the minor version is "RAAG". It can give you feeling to get more and forever. Like cat's love for milk or mouse
Is to not like anything or anybody
4-शोक- shook kashay is the gloominess/melancholy state after to loosing something or somebody, nice things in past, good friends, family.
4.1- Arth dhaya- Think about the old memories (good or bad) Arth dhyan can be for future/present like ‘vedana’.
Raudra dhyan is to have fun in sinful activities like in hunting, eating meat, gambling etc.
To think about the religious things and dharm related
Is the kind of dhayn only attain by siddhya or trthanker bhagwaan.
Bhay is the feeling to lose something and somebody (good and bad )
The feeling of not likes something and somebody (hate is the intense form of Jugupsa). Do not want to keep close to him.

Notes for Nov 12th, Page 39-40
Date: November 12th
Chapter 2.
Page: 39-40
On Nov 12, initially we did revision of 4 कषाय and talked about its 4 प्रकार.
4.कषाय are - Krodh, Man, Maya, Lobh.
4. प्रकार are Anantanubandhi, Apratakhanavarni, Pratakhanavarni and Sanjulan.
Because of Anantanubandhi कषाय, Jive cannot be Samayak. Because of Sanjulan. Jive cannot express his YathaKhyatCharita, but it does allow expressing SakalCharita.
There is not time till now that any Sansari jive did not do मिथ्यात्व and because of that कषाय. Hence Jive does not believe that कषाय is bad and never tried to give up कषाय. We tried to reduce कषाय, but never tried to remove मिथ्यात्व from root, which is right thing to do. मिथ्यात्व is root for कषाय. We also talked that because of our previous Punya, we are able to get this Vitrag Wani.
We also discussed how these कषाय cause pain and people’s behavior under influence of these कषाय. We also talked about 6 Lesya. From Krishna Lesya which is too strong and Sukla which is too mild. We also talked all Sansari binds all 4 कषाय all the time.
There are 4 types of stage when Jive is मिथ्यात्व from strong to mild are base on Anubhag
· Sella,
· Asthi,
· Daru,
· Latha.
So order mentioned like To break Sella, it takes so much efforts, similarly Sella type of Mithyatva, takes so much efforts to break. But for Lakdi takes so less efforts to break it. So understand that within Mithyatva, some Mithyatva takes long time to remove, and other type’s takes less time.
Then we discussed, there are 4 types of Anger –
· Shilla(Big Stone),
· Pathavi ki Rehka,
· Dhuli ki Rehkha,
· Jal ki Rehkha.
One कषाय can be in Uday for minimum 1 Samay and maximum 1 Antarmurt.
Anantanubandhi is worst कषाय because that one Samayak ka Ghat karti hai. The second worst is Sanjulan कषाय because that one YathaKhyatCharita ka Ghat karti and then comes pratyakhyan, apratyakhyan.
Then we discussed about which order for 4 कषाय in terms of Anubhag - Lobh, Maya, Krodh, Man. Here order for worseness of कषाय is in decreasing order. For example anantanubandhi Lobh is worse than anantanubandhi Maya, in that order. The same rules apply in similar order for pratyakhyan, apratyakhyan and Sanjulan.
In Human – Lobh, Maya, Krodh and Man is for more duration.
Intensity wise – Human has highest Man, Animal has highest Maya, Dev has highest Lodh and Naraki has highest Krodh.
When Jiv enters in to Moksh Marg, either 3, 2 or 1 प्रकारकि कषाय Uday hota hai. But definitely Anantanubandhi कषाय Chali jati hai.
At any time only 1 कषाय ka Uday Hota hotai. Besides one कषाय convert into another कषाय.
